How recruiting actually feels at Ross
It feels practical. Action-based projects, clubs, and a Midwest work ethic can make you look ready. The leak is translation. A MAP debrief is a team story about a client deliverable. A case interview is you, alone, with incomplete exhibits, closing in 20 seconds. Students who say "I already did the real thing in MAP" often under-drill the artificial thing firms actually test.
Ann Arbor is not Chicago. You will travel for a lot of office density, or you will live on Zoom. Detroit and Chicago are real staffing markets; New York is a trip. Plan like Tuck, not like Booth.
A large, well-organized club means you can always find a mock. That is not the same as getting better. Friendly MAP teammates may not interrupt you.
How to use the Ross case book legally
Use the edition the school or club provides to current students. Do not download a scraped copy, do not post chapters in a public drive, and do not paste cases into a blog. Copyright sits with the school and the students who wrote the material.

- Trees and industry vocabulary.
- Exhibit reading when nobody is talking.
- Math setups on paper.
- A sense of written-case length.
What it misses
- A human who cuts you off — the McKinsey interviewer-led skill.
- Candidate-led silence with no next page.
- PEI, including the MAP story you think is "done."
- Scoring. Turning a page is not a debrief.

MAP versus the case. MAP trains client management, ambiguity, and teamwork. Keep those as PEI. Do not import MAP process ("we aligned the steering committee") into the last 30 seconds of a case. The case close is a decision with a number.
How to use the Ross consulting club without under-drilling
- Filter partners who are targeting consulting this cycle, not classmates who want a MAP-style discussion.
- Cap book cases per week. Extra pages after that go to live format.
- Use Chicago and NYC alumni for office geography on trip days. Case in Ann Arbor the night before you drive.
- Cut MAP stories until they are two minutes with a personal decision.
Four weeks before MAP eats the calendar
Place this in first-year autumn, not in the MAP semester. MAP will take hours you cannot fake. If you wait to "practice on the project," you will arrive at internship interviews with a great client story and a rusty tree. Use the MBA consulting recruiting timeline and 2026 deadlines.
Week 1 — Book as inventory. Skim the legal club edition. Two timed written cases. List leaks. Stop collecting PDFs. Write one MAP bullet as PEI, not as a case close.
Week 2 — Live takeover. Interviewer-led every other day. Candidate-led on the others. One PEI session that includes MAP as a conflict story, not a slide recap.
Week 3 — Midwest travel. A Chicago (or Detroit) window if you can do it without skipping mocks. Case the night before. Confirm applications. No new target list inflation.
Week 4 — Compression before the project spike. Back-to-backs. Recommendation in 20 seconds. You are banking skill you will not have time to build during MAP. Use CoachNed when the club is already in project mode.
