Most candidates compare CoachNed and Management Consulted by case count or brand familiarity. That is the wrong axis. Management Consulted sells a taught curriculum and billable hours with former MBB coaches. CoachNed sells scored spoken interview loops you can run alone at 11 p.m. After this piece you should be able to name which product fits your week, and stop stacking both "just in case."
The market for advice is large for a reason. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics counts about 1.08 million management-analyst jobs in 2024 and projects roughly 98,100 openings a year through 2034. Firms still hire by listening to you think out loud. McKinsey's own interview page describes a personal-experience interview plus a problem-solving case built around a client-like scenario. No product changes that. Prep tools only change how you get ready for the room.
Two products, two jobs
Management Consulted has been packaging consulting prep since 2008. Its public catalog is built around three layers: a self-paced digital curriculum (All Access Pass, $700 for one year as of September 2026), a community membership that wraps that library with events and networking, and one-to-one coaching that starts at $350 per hour and scales into multi-hour packages such as Black Belt (listed around $2,250 on their products page for the coaching-plus-curriculum bundle).
What you buy from MC, on their own pages, is volume of teaching assets: 600+ practice cases with solutions, 10,000+ drills, nine video courses, industry primers, chatbot cases, and (if you pay for it) live Zoom time with an MBB coach. That is a real job. If you cannot yet name how a case opens, how structure differs from a memorized framework, or how fit interviews are probed, a sequenced curriculum is useful.
CoachNed is practice software. Everything is open for seven days with no card. After that, a Season Pass is $120 for 90 days or Pro is $49 per month, with a 14-day no-questions refund. The library is 64 original cases, live voice interviews with a seven-score AI debrief, 550+ drills, plus Casey-style chatbot cases, CCA numericals, and PEI/behavioral simulators. The product assumes you will sit the case, get a score tied to a moment, drill the leak, and sit it again.
| Dimension | Management Consulted (public pages) | CoachNed |
|---|---|---|
| Core job | Curriculum + optional human coaching | Scored spoken case loop |
| Entry price (as of 2026-09) | All Access Pass $700 / year | Free week, then $49/mo or $120 / 90 days |
| Human coach | From $350/hour; Black Belt bundles hours | Not included; AI debrief instead |
| Case shape | Large PDF/video/chatbot library with solutions | 64 original cases, voice-first, AI-scored |
| Assessment sims | Included in higher packages (Solve, Gorilla, CCA) | Casey, CCA, PEI, and related sims in-product |
| Refund posture | Community purchase described as non-refundable | 14-day no-questions refund on paid plans |
Case count is a trap. Six hundred cases you mostly read are not the same unit as sixty-four cases you speak under a timer with a score. Count the job, not the catalog.
The consumption trap, with numbers you can reproduce
Assume a six-week MBA recruiting sprint and 10 focused hours a week (60 hours total). That is a plausible load if you still have classes.
Path A — curriculum-heavy. You buy MC's All Access Pass for $700. You spend 4 hours a week on video courses and walkthroughs, 3 hours reading cases and solutions, and 3 hours on drills. Spoken practice with a partner or coach is zero unless you buy hours separately. At $350 per coaching hour, two diagnostic sessions add $700. Total cash: $1,400. Spoken cases under pressure: maybe two.
Path B — reps-heavy. You use CoachNed's free week, then a Season Pass at $120. You spend 1 hour a week on method notes (this blog, a short course, or Learning Mode), 2 hours on drills, and 7 hours on spoken cases: roughly two 20-minute voice cases plus debrief and a targeted drill each session night. Over six weeks that is on the order of 20–25 scored spoken cases. Total cash: $120. Human coach hours: zero unless you later buy two independent hours for presence feedback.
Path C — stacked. You buy both All Access and a Season Pass because a classmate named both brands. Cash: $820 before any coaching. If the curriculum eats the evenings, the Season Pass sits unused. That is the expensive failure mode I see most often.
Reproduce the arithmetic yourself. If Path A leaves you with two spoken cases and Path B leaves you with twenty, Path A only wins if the teaching hours were the bottleneck. Once you can open a case cold without looking at a slide deck, additional curriculum hours have a steeply falling return.
Ned's rule. After you can name the four moves — open, structure, analyze, synthesize — every curriculum hour you add should be matched by a spoken case the same week. If the ratio stays 4:1 for two weeks, you are consuming, not preparing.
When Management Consulted is the better spend
Buy MC when the missing piece is instruction or a human, not reps.
- You are starting from near zero and will not speak until someone walks you through the sequence. Their Case Interview Bootcamp and learning pathways are built for that.
- You specifically want an MBB coach in their network, resume edits packaged with coaching, or the community and recruiting-event layer. Those are products CoachNed does not sell.
- Your leak is judgment, arrogance, or presence, and you will actually book and attend the hours. A coach who watches you take a hint is still the gold standard for that failure mode. Software will not tell you that you sound dismissive the way a sharp human will.
- You want Excel, PowerPoint, or networking bootcamps as structured courses. That is curriculum work. CoachNed is not a video university.
Be honest about utilization. A $2,250 Black Belt-style package is a bargain only if the hours get used. Buying a program you will not attend is worse than buying nothing. MC's own Black Belt marketing cites an 80% offer rate among Black Belts versus a sub-3% industry-wide figure; treat that as their claim about their coached cohort, not as a base rate for every buyer of the digital pass alone.
When CoachNed is the better spend
Buy CoachNed when you already know what a case is and the bottleneck is volume with a rubric.
- You can open and structure without notes, but your math collapses under time, your synthesis wanders, or you never get firm-specific assessment practice. Sit scored cases; drill the leak; sit again.
- You need Casey-style chatbot practice, CCA numericals, or PEI follow-ups in one product. Those live under
/casey/urbanbrew-coffee-margin-case,/tools/bcg-cca-simulator, and/behavioral. - You will not use coaching hours this month. Software at $49–$120 is the honest buy. Paying $350 for an hour you reschedule three times teaches nothing.
- You need evening and weekend coverage without coordinating a partner. The interviewer on CoachNed shows up when you do.
CoachNed is not the better spend if you need someone to redesign your story set from scratch, rewrite your resume line by line with a human editor, or walk you through your first case like a seminar. That is still MC's lane, or an independent coach's.
A worked week: "Northline Retail" without buying anything yet
Invent a firm so the math is yours. Northline Retail runs 120 stores. Same-store sales fell 4% last year. Contribution margin is 28%. Fixed store costs are $1.2M a year per store on average. The prompt: should Northline close the bottom 15 stores?
A weak spoken answer lists "customers, competitors, costs" and never does the math. A better answer in the first two minutes: closing 15 stores saves 15 × $1.2M = $18M in fixed costs if those stores are truly separable. Lost contribution is 15 × (store revenue × 28%). You need revenue per store before you vote. Ask for it. If average revenue in the bottom cohort is $3.5M, lost contribution is 15 × $3.5M × 0.28 ≈ $14.7M. Net before transition costs: about +$3.3M. Then pressure-test cannibalization, lease exit costs, and brand effects.
That sequence is what the scoring sheet rewards: structured ask, arithmetic you can defend, synthesis with a clear recommendation. You do not learn it by watching someone else do it twice. You learn it by saying the numbers out loud, hearing where you stalled, and repeating. That is the CoachNed loop. Watching a polished walkthrough of a similar case is the MC curriculum loop. Both can be useful; they are not substitutes.
How I would allocate a recruiting budget
| Your situation | First spend | Second spend (only if needed) |
|---|---|---|
| Never done a case | MC All Access (or free school access) for 1–2 weeks of sequence | CoachNed Season Pass for daily spoken reps |
| Know the moves; weak under pressure | CoachNed free week, then $120 Season Pass | Two independent coach hours for presence |
| Need human story/resume help | MC coaching hour or Black Belt slice | CoachNed for case volume between sessions |
| BCG/McKinsey assessments on calendar | Firm sample materials first | CoachNed Casey/CCA/Solve-style sims |
| Bought both and feel behind | Pause curriculum; spoken cases only for 10 days | Reopen videos only for named leaks |
If your school already gives you complimentary All Access through an MC partnership, use it. Do not also buy CoachNed Annual out of FOMO. Use their curriculum to install the model, then live in spoken cases. The clean split is content first, then reps — not two subscriptions forever.
Try one scored case today
If you have already watched a week of curriculum, stop consuming tonight. Sit a five-minute first rep at /start (three typed turns, instant scores, no account), or the full voice UrbanBrew case at /interview (~18 minutes, seven-score debrief). Everything on CoachNed is open for seven days; then it is $120 for a recruiting season or $49 a month. If a coach later names "you do not take hints," buy two human hours — whether that coach is in MC's network or independent. Software first for volume; humans for the judgment leak.
Frequently asked questions
Is CoachNed cheaper than Management Consulted?
Monthly software at $49, or a $120 Season Pass, is usually cheaper than a $700 digital year or a $350 coaching hour. Cheaper does not mean it replaces a great human session. Compare cost per spoken case you actually complete, not sticker price.
Does CoachNed use Management Consulted's cases?
No. CoachNed's 64 cases are original. MC has its own materials, solutions, and chatbot cases. Do not expect cross-compatibility, and do not treat either catalog as affiliated with McKinsey, BCG, Bain, or Deloitte.
Which has more practice cases?
MC publicly advertises 600+ cases with solutions plus chatbot cases. CoachNed has 64 scored, voice-ready cases. Volume of PDFs is the wrong comparison if your interview is spoken. Ask which product produces more scored reps in your calendar.
Can I use both Management Consulted and CoachNed?
Yes, in sequence. Install the model with curriculum for a short window, then switch hard to spoken cases. Stacking both subscriptions while only watching videos is the common waste pattern.
When should I buy a human coach instead of more software?
Buy CoachNed when you already know what a case is and the bottleneck is volume with a rubric.
When your leak is presence, arrogance, hint-taking, or story design, and you will attend the session. Two diagnostic hours after you can name the leak beat a 20-hour package on day one. See also the private-coaching comparison linked below.?
