EY Case Interview 2026: Consulting vs EY-Parthenon, Assessments, Cases

EY Consulting interviews are not EY-Parthenon. Online skills assessment, job simulation, implementation cases. How they differ from McKinsey and BCG.

UpdatedReviewed by NedIndependent practice

EY Consulting, Strategy and Transactions, and EY-Parthenon are three doors. This page is core Consulting. If the posting says Parthenon, switch guides.

EY acquired The Parthenon Group in 2014 and kept a distinct strategy brand. Candidates who treat "EY case interview" as one format fail the conviction test at Parthenon and over-index on diligence math in Consulting. This guide is the Consulting (and adjacent S&T implementation) route: an early online skills assessment, often a job simulation, then structured cases that reward a business case for a programme rather than a buy/no-buy. Parthenon process, written diligence packets, and PE flavour are in the EY-Parthenon case interview guide. Pay splits the same way: Levels.fyi puts EY management-consultant packages near $104K at Consultant and $210K at Manager; Parthenon sits above that band. Use the EY consulting salary tables, not a blended Google result. CoachNed is independent and not affiliated with EY.

What EY Consulting actually runs

EY's own US early-career application guidance says interview formats differ by subservice line, and that applicants typically receive an email invitation to an online skills assessment within one business day. The application is not complete until that assessment is done. The US early-careers assessment FAQ says most candidates finish the core skills assessment in about 20 minutes and must complete it within 24 hours of the invitation. Expedition EY is a separate early-career label; treat it as whatever your instructions say, not as a universal case format (Expedition EY).

PrepLounge-style firm notes describe first-round interviews of roughly 30–60 minutes with a fit segment attached, and two to three rounds over several weeks. That is directional. EY itself will not publish one global round count.

How an EY Consulting case differs from McKinsey interviewer-led and BCG candidate-led

McKinsey is interviewer-led problem solving plus a separate PEI. BCG is candidate-led generalist strategy. EY Consulting is closer to a structured conversation about whether a programme is worth doing and how it lands. Interviewers may feed you more of the question sequence than a BCG interviewer would (a McKinsey-like steer) while still expecting you to own a benefits case and a residual operating model (an implementation close BCG profitability cases do not demand). The math centre of gravity is a business case: run-rate savings, one-off cost, dual-running, adoption risk. It is not McKinsey's exhibit-by-exhibit inference, and it is not Parthenon's entry multiple.

If you have only rehearsed interviewer-led McKinsey cases, you may wait for the next question and never size the implementation cash. If you have only rehearsed BCG market-entry, you may recommend "transform the operating model" with no benefits tracker. EY interviewers who staff technology and transformation work hear that gap immediately.

Worked snippet: automation business case (Consulting flavour)

Prompt. A payments operations team of 420 people processes 18 million items a year. Leadership wants to automate 40% of volume in 12 months with a $14 million platform build. Finance will only fund programmes with payback under three years. Should they sign?

Clarify. Payback is cash payback, not NPV. Ask what happens to the 40% of items that fail straight-through processing, and whether headcount reduction is in scope or redeployment is required.

Structure. (1) Addressable volume and exception rate, (2) run-rate labour saving, (3) build plus dual-running cost, (4) residual risk (fraud, SLA). Test addressable volume first.

Math. 18 million × 40% = 7.2 million items. If straight-through processing is only 75% of that block, automated items are 5.4 million. Current cost per item: 420 people × $65,000 fully loaded ≈ $27.3 million / 18 million ≈ $1.52. Saving 5.4 million × $1.52 ≈ $8.2 million a year if headcount actually comes out. Dual-running for nine months at 30% of the team still on the old process is extra cash. Simple payback on $14 million at $8.2 million run-rate is about 1.7 years if savings are real. If HR will only redeploy, not reduce, run-rate saving is near zero and the case fails the three-year hurdle.

Recommendation. Sign only with a written headcount plan that takes 80 roles out as STP hits 75% on the target block. Otherwise do not spend $14 million. Risk: exception spikes in month three blow the SLA. Next step: 20-day sample of item types before vendor signature.

That ending is Consulting-shaped: funding hurdle, people constraint, and a go/no-go on a platform, not a market-entry tree.

How to prepare this week

  1. Read the posting. If it says EY-Parthenon, stop and use the Parthenon guide.
  2. Complete any named assessment inside the stated window. Do not use GenAI if the rules forbid it.
  3. Run one implementation business-case on CoachNed.
  4. Write a Why EY Consulting answer that does not collapse into Why Parthenon or Why MBB.

Glassdoor, Indeed, and Levels.fyi disagree on EY Consultant totals (Levels.fyi ~$104K; Glassdoor bands in the high-$130Ks to low-$190Ks mixing levels). Show the source, then confirm the letter on the EY consulting salary page.

Frequently asked questions

Is EY-Parthenon the same as EY Consulting?

No. Different brand, case ending (investment decision vs programme business case), and pay band.

Is the EY case like McKinsey?

Not as a house style. Expect more implementation economics and a named online assessment.

What is Expedition EY?

Follow your instructions. Public pages do not fix one global format. See Expedition EY. CoachNed is independent practice, not affiliated with EY. Cases on CoachNed are AI-simulated. Subservice line and country change the process.
