The candidates who lose the most money and the most time treat "Big 4 vs MBB" as one binary. It is not. It is three products that share two brand umbrellas: McKinsey/BCG/Bain, the Big 4 strategy arms (Monitor Deloitte, Strategy&, EY-Parthenon), and core Big 4 advisory. The logo on the LinkedIn header does not price the offer or set the interview stack. The practice name on the letter does.
I score cases for both worlds. From the interviewer's chair, the shared skill is structured problem-solving. Everything else newcomers Google as "the difference" — pay bands, digital screens, group cases, PE exits — is a function of which product you actually got, not which parent brand you applied under.
After this piece you should be able to place any verbal or written offer into the right column, run a year-one cash comparison you can reproduce, and prep the interview format that firm actually uses.
Three products under two logos
MBB is McKinsey, BCG, and Bain: generalist strategy/operations consulting with a case-heavy hire and a brand that still opens the widest set of PE and corporate-strategy doors. The firms publish their own interview prep — McKinsey's interviewing hub, BCG's case interview preparation, Bain's case interview page — and they do not pretend to be audit or tax firms.
Big 4 consulting is Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG Advisory. That word "Advisory" matters. Audit and tax are different partnerships, different staffing models, and different interview days. Inside Advisory there is a further split the search bar erases:
| Product | Parent brand | What the firm says it sells | How candidates misprice it |
|---|---|---|---|
| MBB | McKinsey, BCG, Bain | Strategy and operations for C-suite agendas | Treat all "consulting" offers as equal |
| Strategy arm | Deloitte / PwC / EY | Pure strategy under a named brand (Monitor, Strategy&, Parthenon) | Call it "Big 4 pay" |
| Core Big 4 advisory | Same parents | Tech, risk, ops, transformation, industry programs | Assume it pays like Monitor |
Deloitte markets Monitor Deloitte as its strategy practice. PwC recruits separately into Strategy&. EY recruits into EY-Parthenon. Those are not folklore labels. They are the firm's own product names. If your letter says "Senior Consultant, Technology Risk" and your friend's says "Senior Consultant, Monitor Deloitte," you do not share a pay band, a staffing pool, or the same Monday morning.
Ned's rule. Before you compare two offers, read the practice line out loud. If either name is Monitor, Strategy&, or Parthenon, price that letter against Tier 2 strategy — not against core Big 4 Advisory. If both are core Advisory, stop using MBB Glassdoor screenshots as your benchmark.
What year-one cash actually looks like
Firms rarely publish a single global salary page that covers every practice. What you can verify from primary institutional data is the consulting MBA band at elite schools, and the occupational floor for "management analyst" work in the U.S.
Harvard Business School's Class of 2025 consulting function data (as summarized in public employment reporting) shows a median base of $190,000, a median signing bonus of $30,000 (91% receiving), and a median variable bonus of $40,000. That cluster is the MBB and near-MBB MBA market, not core Big 4 Analyst pay. Separately, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a May 2025 median annual wage of $101,860 for management analysts — the broad occupation that includes many consultants outside the elite brand set.
Here is how I sketch the three products for a U.S. MBA hire in a major city. These are Ned's working ranges for 2026 recruiting conversations, not firm-published quotes. Bonuses move; signing packages vary by office; tax is real.
| Product | Typical base (Ned's range) | Illustrative year-1 cash shape | Use this column when… |
|---|---|---|---|
| MBB | $190K–$192K | Base + ~$30–40K signing + ~$30–40K expected bonus → mid-$260Ks to high-$280Ks | Letter says McKinsey, BCG, or Bain |
| Strategy arm | $175K–$192K | Closer to Tier 2 / bottom of MBB than to core Advisory | Letter says Monitor, Strategy&, or Parthenon |
| Core Big 4 advisory | Roughly $90K–$120K for many MBA consultant titles | Base + smaller signing + smaller bonus → often mid-$100Ks | Letter names ops, tech, risk, or industry Advisory |
The gap that surprises people is not "Big 4 vs MBB." It is core Advisory vs strategy arm under the same logo. I have sat across from candidates who turned down Monitor because "I already have Deloitte" — meaning a core letter — and then compared both against an MBB screenshot. That is three different products in one sentence.
Worked example: two New York letters, one spreadsheet
Situation. You are an MBA finishing in New York. Offer A is BCG Consultant. Offer B is Deloitte Senior Consultant in a core industry practice (not Monitor). Both are verbal + written.
Wrong move. Google "Big 4 vs MBB salary 2026," pick one number for Deloitte and one for BCG, and declare a $100K gap.
Right move. Build four lines for each letter: base, target or expected annual bonus, signing, retirement match. Ask the recruiter which practice and city the numbers cover. Then subtract tax and any real cost difference (housing stipend, deferred signing, etc.).
Illustrative model (not a live quote; bonus rates assumed):
| Line | Offer A (BCG) | Offer B (Deloitte core) |
|---|---|---|
| Base | $190,000 | $105,000 |
| Expected year-1 bonus | $40,000 | $18,000 |
| Signing | $30,000 | $15,000 |
| 401(k) match (illustrative) | $7,600 | $4,200 |
| Modeled year-1 cash | $267,600 | $142,200 |
Reproduce the arithmetic: 190 + 40 + 30 + 7.6 = 267.6; 105 + 18 + 15 + 4.2 = 142.2. The gap is about $125K of modeled year-1 cash before tax. If Offer B had been Monitor instead of core, that second column would move toward the strategy-arm row — often by tens of thousands of base alone — and the comparison would stop being "I almost took Big 4."
Interview implication: BCG already tested you on a candidate-led case and a skills interview (BCG's published process). Deloitte core likely already ran digital assessments and may still want a live case that ends with implementation next steps. Those prep hours are not interchangeable.
How the interview stacks actually differ
McKinsey describes a personal experience interview plus a problem-solving (case) interview, with an online assessment for many tracks (McKinsey interviewing). BCG sequences application, skills interview, case interview, and often a team interview. Bain's consulting path typically includes a digital assessment and then case interviews (Bain interviewing overview).
Core Big 4 campus processes lean harder on vendor assessments (job simulations, work-style inventories, immersive exercises) and on group or written cases in finals. Strategy arms sit closer to MBB in case style, but they still inherit parent-firm logistics and values components. Official acceptance rates are not published; the "1–3% MBB" figures floating on forums are folklore, useful only as a reminder to run a multi-tier calendar.
| Element | MBB | Strategy arm | Core Big 4 advisory |
|---|---|---|---|
| Case style | Interviewer-led (McKinsey) or candidate-led (BCG/Bain) | Mostly candidate-led strategy cases | Mixed; often more implementation-heavy close |
| Digital screen | Firm tools (e.g. Solve, Casey, SOVA-style) | Varies; often parent + practice | Common: SHL/Cappfinity-style, immersives |
| Group / written | Occasional | Occasional | Common in many offices |
| Fit / values | PEI or experience interview | Experience + parent values | Explicit values / culture half more often |
If you train only McKinsey, you wait for the next exhibit and then stall when a Deloitte interviewer asks you to own the tree. If you train only BCG, you drive well and then skip the "what happens Monday" close that many Big 4 sheets reward. The case skill transfers. The format does not.
What I listen for when the brands collide
When a candidate walks in with an MBB framework memorized for a core Advisory case, I stop listening for polish and start listening for judgment. The scoring sheet in those rooms usually still wants a clear structure and clean math. It also wants a recommendation a client team could staff next week: owners, sequence, risk, and how you would know it worked.
Conversely, when someone treats an MBB case like a technology-risk scoping exercise — long process maps, thin on the decision — they leak the synthesis points the MBB sheet is built to catch.
Same brain. Different product. Prep the product you are interviewing for that week.
Exits, hours, and what firms will not publish
MBB still opens a wider door into PE associate roles and generalist corporate strategy. Strategy arms open a similar strategy-exit set with more parent-firm optionality into deals and industry teams. Core Big 4 advisory opens operations, technology, risk, and industry roles that a two-year MBB generalist may never have staffed.
Hours: firms do not publish a reliable weekly average by practice. Candidate-reported ranges on Glassdoor and Reddit are where the folklore lives — treat them as anecdotes, not data. Ask recent alumni in the specific practice and city.
Take MBB if optionality is the product and the work fits. Take a strategy arm if you want strategy economics under a Big 4 parent. Take core Advisory if you want a named practice and a staffing model you can live with. Do not take core because you "almost" got Monitor.
Practice the format you have not used
Pick the interview style you have practiced least. Run one full case in that style today — interviewer-led if you have only done BCG/Bain trees, candidate-led with an implementation close if you have only done McKinsey exhibits.
CoachNed's five-minute first rep works without an account. For a full voice case with a seven-score debrief, use /interview (UrbanBrew, about 18 minutes). Drill the weak skill on /drills/structure or /drills/synthesis. Everything is open for seven days, no card; then $120 for a recruiting season or $49 a month.
Frequently asked questions
Is Monitor Deloitte a Big 4 offer or an MBB-like offer?
It is a Deloitte strategy-arm offer. Deloitte describes Monitor as its strategy practice. Price and interview it nearer Tier 2 strategy than core Advisory, and do not use a core Deloitte Analyst band as the comparison.
Do Big 4 firms use McKinsey-style interviewer-led cases?
Not as the house style. Expect mixed formats, more digital screens, and often group or written components. Confirm with the recruiter for your office and practice.
Why do HBS consulting medians look like MBB pay?
Elite MBA consulting placements cluster at MBB and near-MBB bases. HBS Class of 2025 consulting reporting shows a $190K median base with high signing and bonus receipt rates. That is not a proxy for core Big 4 Analyst offers.
Should I apply to MBB and Big 4 in the same week?
Yes if your calendar allows, but prep by product. An MBB Solve/Casey/SOVA week and a Cappfinity immersive week are different study blocks. Sequence the digital assessments so you are not learning two vendor tools the night before both.
How do I compare two offers that share a logo?
Read the practice line, rebuild year-one cash line by line, and ask which staffing pool and bonus history apply. Logo-level averages are how candidates misprice Strategy& against PwC Advisory. CoachNed is independent and not affiliated with McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Deloitte, PwC, EY, or KPMG.
