Monitor Deloitte Case Interview 2026: Written Case, Group Case, Strategy Fit

Monitor Deloitte is not core Deloitte Consulting. Candidate-led strategy cases, a written packet to a Director, group case. Why Monitor is the fit test.

UpdatedReviewed by NedIndependent practice

Monitor Deloitte is Deloitte's strategy practice. Interviewing as if it were core Consulting is the most common way to fail fit.

Monitor Group, the firm Michael Porter helped found in 1983, was acquired by Deloitte in 2013. The practice still runs corporate strategy, growth, pricing, M&A, and business design: where to play and how to win, before anyone stands up a system. Core Deloitte Consulting covers implementation, technology, human capital, and operations. They share a parent. They do not share an interview. The make-or-break question is why Monitor, not why Deloitte. Pay follows the split: Monitor generally sits about 10 to 20 percent above core at the same level (a post-MBA Senior Consultant base near $192K versus about $170K at core, per the Deloitte consulting salary note). CoachNed is independent and not affiliated with Deloitte.

What Monitor actually runs

Candidate reports compiled in CoachNed's Monitor behavioral guide describe two rounds for graduate and post-MBA hiring. Each round pairs a dedicated 30–45 minute behavioral interview with one or two candidate-led cases of 30–40 minutes. Case interviewers also open and close with fit. Most candidates face four to six interviews in total. The written case exists because it mirrors the job: organise messy information, form a point of view, present it. Graduates often get about 30 minutes to prep; experienced hires closer to 45–50 minutes, then roughly 45 minutes of discussion. A group case appears in many US finals and in UK/EMEA assessment centres: four to six candidates, 20–45 minutes, assessors watching dynamics more than the "right" answer.

Core Consulting still uses the Cappfinity Immersive and Job Simulation on many campus routes. Monitor candidates should not assume those modules; they should not ignore them if the email names them. Confirm.

How Monitor differs from McKinsey interviewer-led and BCG candidate-led

Monitor cases are candidate-led like BCG and Bain: you propose the tree, ask for data, drive to a recommendation. They are not McKinsey interviewer-led scripts, and PEI is not a separate branded hour. Fit is scored twice, by the same people who just watched your case.

The written case is the format neither McKinsey nor a standard BCG first round uses as a default. McKinsey almost never asks you to build a packet alone and defend it to a Director. BCG written cases exist in some offices; Monitor uses the format because business design work looks like a memo, not a back-and-forth exhibit dump. Practise answer-first slides: recommendation in sentence one, load-bearing number, risk, next test. Chronological storytelling is the failure mode.

Content is strategy, not implementation. A Deloitte Technology case about architecture sequencing is the wrong rehearsal. Market entry, growth, competitive position, pricing, and M&A are the Monitor object. If every story on your resume is delivery, interviewers will hear core Consulting.

Worked snippet: business design / growth (Monitor flavour)

Prompt. A regional hospital group with $1.1 billion of revenue is deciding whether to build a $90 million ambulatory surgery network or keep sending those cases to two academic partners. The board wants a five-year where-to-play answer, not a construction plan.

Clarify. The decision is compete versus partner, not "how do we implement an EHR." Ask for current outpatient surgery volume, contribution per case, and whether the academic partners would retaliate on referrals.

Structure. (1) Attractiveness of the ambulatory pool, (2) the group's right to win (surgeons, sites, brand), (3) economics versus partnership, (4) competitive response. Test the pool first.

Math. Suppose 18,000 eligible cases leave for partners today at $4,200 contribution each = $75.6 million of contribution the group does not capture. Capture 40% in five years = 7,200 cases × $4,200 = $30.2 million contribution. $90 million capex / $30.2 million ≈ 3.0 years simple payback if volume is real. If surgeons will not move, capture is 15% and contribution is $11.3 million; payback stretches past eight years and the build fails.

Recommendation. Do not approve $90 million until a named surgeon-alignment plan shows a path to at least 35% capture. If alignment is weak, renegotiate the academic partnership for a share of contribution instead of building. Risk: partners cut inbound referrals on inpatient. Next step: confidential interviews with the top 20 surgeons in 30 days; the written case should open with that gate, not with a site map.

That is Monitor-shaped: a where-to-play call, a number that flips the build, and a next test a Director can staff.

How to prepare this week

  1. Write Why Monitor in one paragraph that draws the Deloitte line explicitly. Rehearse it in the behavioral guide.
  2. Drive one candidate-led growth or M&A case on CoachNed.
  3. Time a 30-minute written packet: three slides, answer first.
  4. Read Monitor versus core pay on the Deloitte consulting salary page so you do not mix bands.
