No firm publishes a certified global rank. Use lists to shortlist, then verify the entity, the interview, and the letter.
Vault Consulting 50 is a prestige survey (Vault cites 17,000+ consultant surveys on its consulting rankings). Revenue lists put Deloitte, Accenture, PwC, and EY above MBB because they count audit, tax, and implementation. Per-consultant economics and campus prestige still put McKinsey, BCG, and Bain in a different candidate market. Source Global Research is often cited for industry size; treat any "$350B+" figure as industry context, not your offer. CoachNed is independent and not affiliated with Vault or any firm named here.
What different lists actually measure
| Lens | What it optimises | Trap |
|---|---|---|
| Prestige (Vault and similar) | Brand and perceived selectivity | Ignores that Monitor ≠ core Deloitte |
| Revenue / headcount | Scale of the parent | EY-Parthenon "25,000" on some lists is not consistent with 9,000–10,000 strategy-arm figures elsewhere; likely parent bleed |
| Pay tables | Cash at a level | Mixing L.E.K. Associate (undergrad) with McKinsey Associate (MBA) |
| Interview difficulty | Format novelty | KPMG Launch Pad is hard for MBB-only prep; McKinsey Solve is hard for Big 4-only prep |
| Exits | PE vs industry vs tech | OW FS exits ≠ generalist MBB exits |
CoachNed's own 25-firm table (revenue and headcount estimates) disagrees with other CoachNed pages on several counts: Kearney 5,300+ vs ~5,700; Roland Berger ~3,500 vs ~4,000; L.E.K. ~2,300–2,400 vs ~4,100; Oliver Wyman ~5,000 vs ~7,000; EY-Parthenon 9,000 vs 10,000 vs 25,000. When two sources disagree, show both and do not quote a census in an interview.
A practical 2026 candidate stack, not a rank:
- MBB: McKinsey, BCG, Bain (interviewer-led vs candidate-led split inside the trio).
- Independent Tier 2 strategy: Oliver Wyman, Kearney, L.E.K., Roland Berger, Arthur D. Little.
- Big 4 strategy arms: Monitor Deloitte, Strategy&, EY-Parthenon, KPMG Strategy.
- Big 4 core Advisory / Consulting.
- Implementation giants: Accenture, IBM Consulting, Capgemini Invent.
- Specialists: economic (CRA, NERA, Analysis Group), restructuring (AlixPartners, A&M, FTI), pricing (Simon-Kucher), life sciences commercial (ZS).
Consultancy.org and Consulting.us publish sector lists that reorder names (for example automotive "diamond" tiers that put AlixPartners next to McKinsey). Those are sector lists, not campus prestige.
Interview formats the lists hide
| Firm type | Case control vs McKinsey / BCG | Extra filter |
|---|---|---|
| McKinsey | Interviewer-led | Solve games |
| BCG / Bain | Candidate-led | Casey / SOVA |
| Kearney / L.E.K. / OW / Roland Berger | Candidate-led like BCG, different content | OW numerical variants; Kearney 40/60 test; RB group case |
| Monitor / Strategy& / EYP | Candidate-led strategy | Written packets; EYP diligence ending |
| Big 4 core | Mixed; implementation close | Cappfinity, SHL, KPMG immersive |
A "top 10" that lumps PwC with Strategy& sends you to the wrong mock. The same error hits Deloitte/Monitor and EY/Parthenon. Rank the interview you will sit, then the brand.
McKinsey interviewer-led plus Solve is a different sport from BCG candidate-led plus Casey, and both differ from a Kearney operations case or a KPMG values Super Day. Prestige lists flatten that. If you only have hours for three mocks, pick three formats, not three logos from the same tier.
Worked snippet: a ranking error that costs an offer
Bad stack. "I am targeting PwC because it ranks above Oliver Wyman on revenue, and I practised McKinsey interviewer-led cases."
Math on pay, from public tables. Strategy& MBA headlines in the 2026 report sit near $190K base and up to ~$250K total cash in strong packages. Core PwC Advisory is a different band (associate totals often $93K–$132K). Oliver Wyman posted $110K undergrad Consultant base and ~$209K Associate median total. Revenue rank would have sent you to the wrong process and the wrong number.
Fix. Rank your applications by entity and interview format. Practise that format on CoachNed. Then read cash on the consulting salary guide.
How to use a ranking in recruiting
Shortlist three tiers, not 25 logos. For each logo, write the entity (Monitor vs Deloitte). Match one mock to each format. Ask alumni about staffing, not about Vault. If you need a prestige signal for PE, MBB still leads. If you need procurement depth, Kearney's franchise can outrank MBB on that mandate even when Vault does not.
