How to Get Into Consulting: MBB, Tier 2, and Big 4 Paths (2026)

How to get into consulting across all tiers — MBB, Kearney, Oliver Wyman, Strategy&, EY-Parthenon, and Big 4 — not McKinsey-only. How to pick a list, clear each firm's screen, and sequence prep.

UpdatedReviewed by Ned

Getting into McKinsey, BCG, or Bain is a different problem from getting into consulting. Most candidates collapse those two. They run an MBB-only process, miss Big 4 and Tier 2 windows, and treat a Deloitte case like a McKinsey PEI. This page is the all-tiers map. For the MBB-only funnel — resume, Solve/Casey/Sova, PEI, under-1% selectivity — use how to get into MBB. Read that if MBB is the only offer you will accept. Read this if you want a job in the industry.

What “consulting” actually means on a target list

The industry is not one ladder. It is four hiring machines that share a case interview and almost nothing else.

MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) hires a thin generalist class, prices strategy work at a premium, and runs a five-gate process. Acceptance is under 1% globally, as documented in the MBB roadmap.

Tier 2 / strategy specialists — Oliver Wyman, Kearney, L.E.K., Roland Berger, Strategy& (PwC), EY-Parthenon, and similar — hire for a mix of generalist strategy and deep practices (financial services, procurement, life sciences, PE diligence). The case is still the gate. The resume screen is often more practice-aware: a supply-chain intern is a better Kearney story than a generic “leadership” bullet.

Big 4 consulting — Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG — is not one product. Monitor Deloitte, Strategy&, and EY-Parthenon sit closer to strategy. Core advisory, tech, risk, and implementation sit closer to delivery. The salary guide is blunt about the cash gap: MBB MBA year-one totals sit around $267K–$285K; Big 4 analyst packages sit around $80K–$115K base with lower bonus. Do not pick a firm by logo and discover on day one you joined an implementation practice.

Boutiques (industry or function shops) hire fewer people, often with less campus machinery. A referral plus a specialist story can outweigh school brand.

A sane list for most candidates is not “the three MBB offices plus hope.” It is two or three reach firms, three or four fit firms whose work matches your evidence, and two volume firms whose process you can actually finish. If you only have time to case-prep one format well, you still apply across tiers — you just sequence interviews so the first live case is not your first case.

How the screens differ by tier

Every firm still does some version of resume → assessment → interviews → offer. What they weight is not the same.

Resume. MBB looks for a short list of signals: school, GPA band, brand internships, quantified impact. Big 4 volume screens are more ATS-heavy and more willing to read a 3.2 with a CPA track, a tech internship, or a campus leadership load. Tier 2 often cares whether your internships look like their work. Rewrite the same one-page resume for the audience: procurement and operations bullets toward Kearney; PE diligence and market-entry toward L.E.K. or Parthenon; transformation and ERP toward core Deloitte. Format rules live in the consulting resume guide.

Online tests. McKinsey Solve, BCG Casey, and Bain Sova are MBB-specific. Big 4 processes more often include HireVue, numerical reasoning, or a firm chatbot. Do not spend October grinding Sea Wolf if your live interviews are Deloitte and PwC. Match the test to the invite.

Fit. McKinsey runs a standalone Personal Experience Interview with scored dimensions. BCG and Bain fold fit into each round, with Bain leaning on collaboration and “Bainie” evidence. Big 4 fit is usually motivation, teamwork, and whether you understand the practice you applied to — Monitor versus core, Parthenon versus EY consulting. Reciting an MBB “why consulting” at a KPMG advisory interview is a miss.

Case style. Interviewer-led (McKinsey) versus candidate-led (BCG, Bain, most Tier 2) changes how you drive. Big 4 cases are often shorter, more operational, and more likely to include a written or group exercise. Prep the format you will actually sit.

The interview process page walks the shared funnel. This page’s job is to stop you from treating every logo as McKinsey with a different homepage.

Pick offices and practices before you pick prestige

Office is a staffing model, not a city flex. A New York MBB seat is a travel-heavy generalist machine. A Dallas Big 4 seat may be more local, more industry-tied, and a better life if you do not want Monday–Thursday airports. Ask in coffee chats what a typical week looks like in that office, not what the brand brochure says.

Practice is the other fork. Strategy arms pay more and case harder. Implementation and technology practices hire more people, promote on delivery, and exit into industry operations more often than into PE. If you want the PE door, do not optimize for a tech-implementation offer and hope the logo does the rest. Read exit opportunities before you narrow the list.

Non-target and lower-GPA candidates should overweight firms where a human will read a referred resume. The low GPA plan is about evidence, not slogans. Referrals still matter most at MBB; they also matter at Tier 2 offices that do not visit your campus.

Sequence the work so the calendar matches the industry

Do not start with 40 cases. Start with a list and a calendar.

  1. Lock the list (one week). Ten firms is plenty. Note office, practice, undergrad vs MBA vs experienced-hire portal, and whether they recruit on campus.
  2. Build the resume and story bank (parallel). One page. Four to six behavioral stories that can be retold for PEI or Big 4 “tell me about a time.”
  3. Network in the lane that paysemail outreach first, then coffee chats, then events. Templates live in the networking email and follow-up guides. Do not ask for a referral in the first note.
  4. Apply in seasonal windows, not on a fake master date. US undergrad MBB often clusters in late summer; MBA applications often run August–October; internships often open earlier than full-time. Big 4 is frequently rolling. Confirm every deadline on the firm careers page. Use the deadlines planning system and the recruiting deadlines calendar.
  5. Case last, but not late. Ten to twelve weeks is the MBB default in the MBB guide. For a Big 4–heavy list, you can compress, but you still need live reps in the format you will see. The prep timeline is for interview skills; the undergrad and MBA pages are for the recruiting clock.

Experienced hires skip campus season and compete on level placement. That is a negotiation problem after the letter, and a resume-plus-case problem before it.

What a strong all-tiers application has that an MBB-only packet misses

It names the work. “I want consulting” is not a reason to hire you at EY-Parthenon. “I have two PE diligence internships and want to do commercial due diligence in healthcare” is.

It does not recycle cover letters. Bain and Deloitte are not the same firm. If a cover letter is required, one genuine sentence about this practice is worth more than a paragraph of prestige.

It treats assessments as terminal. One attempt. The test that matches the invite.

It accepts that the offer you get is a tier, not a personality score. The salary guide shows why a BCG versus Deloitte gap is not something you close by asking for more signing. Choose the list accordingly.

If you already know you will only sign MBB, stop here and use the MBB roadmap. If you want to work in this industry, build the wider list, match the screen, and confirm dates on each careers page — not on a blog table.
