Oliver Wyman Case Interview 2026: Collaborative Cases, FS Math, Online Test

Oliver Wyman frames cases as solving with a client. Candidate-led, quant-heavy, FS vocabulary. Numerical test variants disagree. Consultant ≠ McKinsey Associate.

UpdatedReviewed by NedIndependent practice

Oliver Wyman tells you to treat the interviewer as a client who wants the problem solved. The published cases still end on a hard number.

Oliver Wyman is Marsh McLennan's management consulting arm. The MMC 4Q 2024 release used on CoachNed's Why Oliver Wyman page cites roughly $3.4 billion of 2024 revenue, around 7,000 consultants, and 70+ cities in 30 countries. GraduatesFirst, cited on the assessment guide, says over 5,000 professionals across more than 60 offices. Those sources disagree; say "thousands of consultants globally" unless you are quoting a named source. About half the work sits in financial services. Vector (insurance) and Labs (analytics) are specialist filters. Titles invert McKinsey's: Consultant is undergraduate entry (posted 2026 US base $110,000); Associate is MBA. Pay detail is on Oliver Wyman salary. CoachNed is independent and not affiliated with Oliver Wyman or Marsh McLennan.

What Oliver Wyman actually runs

OW publishes practice cases and a six-step method: pinpoint the issue, break it down, pick an approach, analyze, use numbers, make a recommendation. Official cases include Wumbleworld, Aqualine, Supermarket Pharmacy (payback), Dairy Farm (margin tie), Oil Gas Price Strategy (11.4-year payback rejected vs a five-year hurdle), plus Urban Grocers, Autism Digital Device, and Poseidon Water Park. Financial services is not the only published industry. Decode them in Oliver Wyman practice cases.

The online test is inconsistent because OW does not publish one global format. PrepLounge: ~20 minutes, up to 30 multiple-choice, negative marking. My Consulting Offer: ~20-minute work-styles psychometric, four sections, seven traits (Teamwork, Impact, Grit, Curiosity, Rigor, Ownership, Polish). GraduatesFirst: numerical, verbal, SJT, personality. Some offices are described as 40 GMAT-style questions in 60 minutes with no calculator. PracticeAptitudeTests: relative cut near the top of the pool; ~60% rejected on aptitude where it applies; pass-rate anecdotes of 50% vs 60% targets. Treat the invitation as truth. See the Oliver Wyman assessment guide.

How OW differs from McKinsey interviewer-led and BCG candidate-led

OW is candidate-led like BCG, with an official instruction to collaborate. McKinsey is interviewer-led and scripted; you do not set the agenda. If you have only practised McKinsey, OW feels harder because nobody hands you the next chart until you ask. Versus BCG, the quant stack is heavier: published cases are decided by payback, margin, or sizing, not by a qualitative synthesis. BCG Casey and McKinsey Solve are not the OW screen. OW's numerical variant is case-lite exhibit reading, sometimes with a wrong-answer penalty.

Financial services vocabulary (combined ratio, loss ratio, NIM, cost-to-income) is assumed in insurance and banking interviews. Generalist BCG prep does not teach it. Vector and Labs are not the generalist application.

Worked snippet: motor insurer combined ratio (OW FS flavour)

Prompt. Combined ratio moved from 97% to 104% in two years while premiums grew 9% a year. The board wants the ratio under 100% in 18 months. What happened, and what do you do?

Clarify. Combined ratio = loss ratio + expense ratio. Above 100% means underwriting loses money before investment income.

Structure. (1) Which ratio moved, (2) frequency vs severity, (3) mix vs rate, (4) expense programmes. Pick the loss ratio first.

Math. If loss ratio went 68% to 76% and expense ratio 29% to 28%, the problem is claims. Frequency flat at 6%; severity $2,400 to $2,850 is +19% against +9% premium. The book grew by writing newer vehicles at old rates. Closing a seven-point gap on a 76% loss ratio needs about a 9% rate increase on the affected segment (or a smaller increase plus deductibles).

Recommendation. Reprice the newer-vehicle segment ~9% and raise deductibles on the high-severity cohort. Do not cut expenses; the expense ratio already improved. Risk: volume loss. Next step: severity by vehicle age band.

OW's method would score "pick an approach" in the sentence that tested claims first.

How to prepare this week

  1. Work OW's official cases, especially Pharmacy, Dairy Farm, and Oil Gas.
  2. If a numerical test is named, practise exhibit speed and the skip-versus-guess rule from the assessment guide.
  3. Run a candidate-led profitability case on CoachNed.
  4. Map Consultant vs Associate before comparing to MBB: Oliver Wyman salary.
