Roland Berger Case Interview 2026: Group Case, Restructuring, Online Test

Roland Berger is candidate-led with a Super Day group case. Automotive and turnaround flavour. Korn Ferry vs generic analytics tests: confirm the invite.

UpdatedReviewed by NedIndependent practice

Roland Berger's differentiator is a final-round group case. Individual MBB-style prep is not enough.

Roland Berger was founded in Munich in 1967 and has been partner-owned since the 1998 management buyout. Firm-profile figures on the salary page put more than 50 offices and roughly 3,500 employees, with revenue crossing one billion euros in 2023. A CoachNed ranking table lists ~4,000 people and ~$1.1 billion. Those sources disagree. The case flavour is European industrials, automotive, energy, infrastructure, and restructuring. Pay splits by geography: Germany entry base often cited €60K–€80K; US Consultant total $168K–$237K in offer-tracker bands. Read euros and dollars separately. What Roland Berger actually runs

CaseStar and StrategyCase describe candidate-led individual cases and a final Super Day (Bewerbertag in DACH). StrategyCase: analytical test after the CV screen (Korn Ferry-based in that write-up), first round of two individual cases, then a single-day final with an individual case, a behavioral interview, and a group case. CaseStar: the firm publicly confirms online analytics tests covering data interpretation, quantitative reasoning, and logic, with item-level detail unpublished. Treat vendor names as reported, not as a global constant. Group case reports: 3–6 candidates, 10–15 page pack, 30–40 minutes to analyse and build 3–5 slides, 15–20 minutes presenting to a panel. DACH may run part of the process in German.

Official careers webinars walk Transit-Oriented Development and 3D-Printed Hip Implants. Use them before generic casebooks. Transit-oriented development is a reminder that fare revenue is not the whole earnings model; the hip-implant case is a reminder that additive manufacturing does not cheapen with volume the way injection moulding does. Those two instincts are more useful in a Munich Super Day than another consumer profitability tree. Eight worked archetypes are on Roland Berger practice cases. A June 2024 Roland Berger / Civey survey of 500 C-level executives (73% saw structural upheaval; 56% said conventional cost-driven restructuring is no longer enough) is the firm's own hint that a pure cost answer is incomplete.

How Roland Berger differs from McKinsey interviewer-led and BCG candidate-led

Individual cases are candidate-led like BCG. McKinsey interviewer-led practice trains you to wait. Here you must ask for the plant-level contribution split. Versus BCG, the sector bias is stronger (automotive, industrials, energy) and the recommendation culture is more sequential: cash first, then footprint, then earnings rebuild. McKinsey PEI is a separate product. Roland Berger fit is entrepreneurial and Europe-industrial. Neither McKinsey nor BCG uses a structured group case as consistently as Roland Berger's Super Day reports describe. That is the format that fails candidates who only paired with a case partner.

Worked snippet: automotive supplier turnaround (Roland Berger flavour)

Prompt. A German tier-one powertrain supplier: EBIT from 8% to minus 2% in three years, revenue flat at €900 million. Banks want a plan in six weeks. What do you do?

Clarify. Cash runway and which covenant is closest. Do not open a generic profitability tree.

Structure. Stabilise (weeks), restructure cost (quarters, works councils), rebuild earnings (years). Test cash first.

Math. If combustion is 70% of revenue and volumes fell 30%, about 21% of the volume that absorbed fixed cost is gone. At 35% contribution on €630 million combustion, lost contribution ≈ €66 million, which more than explains a 10-point swing on €900 million. If EV revenue is €90 million at 12% contribution versus 35% on combustion, mix is dilutive even at constant total revenue.

Recommendation. Six-week cash actions (terms, capex freeze, exit two loss-making combustion contracts). Then consolidate combustion machining into the two highest-utilisation plants; convert one site to EV assembly rather than close it. Reprice EV programmes at volume step-ups. Principal risk: works-council timelines, so start consultation in week one. A cost-only answer ignores the firm's own finding that clients have outgrown conventional cost-driven restructuring.

How to prepare this week

  1. If an analytics test is named, drill data interpretation; do not assume SHL vs Korn Ferry without the email.
  2. Drive one restructuring case on CoachNed.
  3. Practise a group case: one recommendation, no dominance. See the group case playbook.
  4. Read EUR vs USD pay so you do not convert Munich into New York: Roland Berger salary.

Frequently asked questions

McKinsey-style interviewer-led?

No. Candidate-led individual cases plus a group case in many finals.

Is the online test Korn Ferry?

StrategyCase says so; CaseStar says analytics tests without fixing a vendor. Use the invitation.

US or German pay?

Different markets. Do not FX a DACH package into a US story. CoachNed is independent practice, not affiliated with Roland Berger. Cases on CoachNed are AI-simulated. DACH Bewerbertag vs split Super Days varies.
