How recruiting actually feels at Haas
It feels like you should have a point of view about technology even if you want McKinsey. That is fair for SF staffing. It is not a substitute for a generalist case. You can get to downtown San Francisco without a plane. You can also spend the semester in founder talks and arrive at OCR with rusty math.
Haas culture language (the Defining Leadership Principles) is real on campus. Interviewers have heard "question the status quo" as a PEI opening more times than is useful. Translate the principle into one decision you made, one person who disagreed, and a result. If the story only works as a brand of the school, it will not work as McKinsey PEI.
Compared with Stanford, the class is still not a giant East Coast OCR machine, but it is a public flagship with a different mix of backgrounds. Do not assume a smaller private-school club dynamic. Do assume Bay Area gravity. If you want a New York office, say so early and be ready to explain why you would leave the Bay — firms will ask.
How to use the Haas consulting club without under-drilling
The club competes with every tech org on campus.
- Put mocks on the calendar as if they were product onsites. If they are "when people are free," tech will win.
- Ask partners to flag culture-speak in PEI. Replace it with facts.
- Use SF alumni for staffing (tech, PE, healthcare, public sector). Then case in Berkeley the next morning. Do not turn BART into a networking-only activity.
- Practice McKinsey interviewer-led and candidate-led. SF first rounds are not all a fireside chat about product sense.

Four weeks beside Bay Area tech, not after it
Run this in first-year autumn while tech processes are live. A winter-only plan is how Haas candidates keep a "consulting option" that is not offer-quality. Use the MBA consulting recruiting timeline and 2026 deadlines.
Week 1 — Write the choice. One page: why consulting, why this office (SF vs elsewhere), three PEI stories with a real disagreement. Daily short math. If you cannot say the choice in 45 seconds, do not add coffee chats yet.
Week 2 — Cases on tech-interview days. At least two days with both a product or operator screen and a full case. You are training the collision. Close every case with a number. No product-sense ramble in the first two minutes.
Week 3 — SF conversion. One office-specific conversation. BART or a ride with a buffer so you still case at night. Resume bullets that read like startup folklore get rewritten as outcomes. Confirm applications.
Week 4 — Drop culture as a crutch. Back-to-back interviewer-led and candidate-led. PEI without naming a Haas principle unless the interviewer asks about school culture. Use CoachNed if you need an interrupter who does not go to Haas.
