MBA consulting recruiting is a one-year machine, not a four-year undergrad ramp. You arrive, you network in a hurry, you apply in a late-summer to early-fall cluster for many US MBB and strategy firms (often August–October — confirm each posting), you intern, you convert. Second-year full-time recruiting is a shorter, more off-cycle cousin if you did not intern. Do not use the undergrad recruiting guide as your calendar. That clock starts in first year. Yours starts the summer before you matriculate.
Skill prep (cases) has its own article: interview prep timeline. This page is when recruiting happens.
Pre-MBA (offer spring through August)
Once you have the MBA seat, you are in the market. Firms host pre-MBA events, coffee chats, and sometimes internships or “extern” days. Treat this as networking, not as a vacation from cases.
Build: a one-page MBA resume (pre-MBA job quantified), a list of offices, and 10–20 conversations before school if you can. Email templates exist so you do not draft from zero on a beach.
If you are career-switching, you need stories that map to PEI/fit before September, not after. Experienced-hire vs campus: some firms will still run you through the MBA campus process; some will try to park you as experienced. Ask recruiting which portal is yours.
First-year fall: the application and interview crush
For many US MBA programs, internship applications for MBB and peers open in August and close in September–October. That is a seasonal window, not a promise of a day. Use the deadlines system and calendar resource. Confirm on careers pages and on your school’s 12twenty/handshake.
September–November is first rounds, tests (Solve, Casey, Sova), and finals for internships. You cannot start casing in October if interviews are in October. The prep timeline should have begun in the summer.
MBA intern interviews are still cases plus fit, closer to full-time than undergrad intern lite — see internship interviews.
Big 4 and some boutiques run on-campus and rolling. Apply in parallel if you would take the seat. MBA MBB packages in the salary guide sit at $267K–$285K year-one totals; Big 4 MBA offers are a different band in the same guide. The timeline choice is also a pay-tier choice.
Winter–spring of first year
Offers, dings, and second-look weekends. If you have an intern offer, your job becomes not failing the summer (return offers). If you do not, you are in off-cycle / full-time planning for second year: more networking, maybe boutique and industry, maybe a second pass at firms that allow it (reapplying rules still apply).
This is also when people panic-apply to tech or finance. Fine — run a real process, not a mood.
The internship summer
You are an employee. Conversion is the MBA’s main full-time path at MBB. Read the return-offer page before wheels up.
Second year
If you converted, full-time recruiting is mostly admin (office, start date, negotiation). If you did not intern or did not convert, second-year full-time recruiting is a smaller, earlier or parallel window — often still late summer into fall, school-specific. It is not undergrad senior year. There are fewer seats. Your story must explain the intern gap without bitterness.
Experienced-hire postings run all year; they are not “MBA recruiting.” Level is the fight.
How this differs from undergrad (so you do not mix clocks)
| MBA | Undergrad | |
|---|---|---|
| Length of runway | ~4–6 months of intense campus recruiting | Years of clubs, Discovery, junior intern |
| Main prize | Summer intern → return | Junior intern → return, or senior FT |
| Application cluster | Often Aug–Oct intern | Often late summer FT; intern often earlier |
| Case bar | Full professional | Full, but intern altitude can be lower |
| Network | Pre-MBA + club rush | Alumni over years |
Events on MBA campuses are dense for six weeks. Skip the seventh info session if you need a case rep. Coffee chats still matter; they just have to happen in July, not sophomore spring.
Operating cadence for a first-year
- May–July: resume, 15 cases, 15 coffees, test familiarization.
- August: freeze resume, submit as portals open, keep casing.
- September–October: interviews. No new frameworks from Twitter.
- November–January: close the process; prep the intern job or the backup.
If you are at a non-target MBA, the clock is the same and the resume screen is harder. Start coffees earlier, not later. How to get into consulting (all tiers) is your list logic; how to get into MBB is the MBB-only funnel.
Confirm every date. MBA blogs love fake calendars. Yours is the school’s recruiting office plus the firm posting.
