Undergraduate consulting recruiting is a four-year clock. MBA recruiting is a one-year crush. If you copy an MBA calendar, you will miss Discovery-style programs, show up to junior intern recruiting without a resume, or treat senior full-time as “when recruiting starts.” This page is year-by-year. First year: look, don’t pretend you are a junior
Your job is information and eligibility, not a McKinsey intern offer. Join a consulting club if it is useful for cases later, not for a LinkedIn line. Go to a few events. Learn what Discovery and other first/second-year pipelines are.
Do not spam partners. Networking can start with sophomores and analysts, not the global managing partner.
Grades in year one still sit on the transcript forever. If you are already in a hole, read low GPA before you decide MBB is the only brand that counts.
Sophomore year: early pipelines and the first real applications
This is when Discovery, insight weeks, and diversity / early-ID programs live. They often run on a winter–spring posting cycle, not the late-summer MBB full-time cluster. Log them in the deadlines planner.
Sophomore internships in industry (finance, ops, research) are legitimate compensating evidence. A random “consulting” title at a two-person shop is not automatically better than a real analyst internship.
Coffee chats become useful: coffee chat guide. You are not asking for a junior intern referral yet. You are learning offices.
Junior year: the intern that becomes the job
For MBB and most strategy firms, the penultimate-year internship is the main undergrad prize. Intern recruiting windows have, in recent US cycles, often sat earlier than full-time — including spring in some processes. Treat “I’ll apply in September with everyone else” as a way to miss internships.
The interview is the intern interview: junior bar, conversion intent. Then the summer is the return offer.
Case prep belongs in winter/spring of junior year if intern interviews are spring/summer — not the night before. Full-time prep can wait if you convert.

Senior year: full-time if you did not convert (or did not intern)
Full-time undergrad applications for many US MBB offices still cluster in late summer. Internships for the next class may already be closed. You are not on the MBA August–October intern calendar.
If you interned and converted, senior fall is not recruiting. If you interned and did not convert, you are in a reapplication / other-firm problem with a known data point.
If you never interned, senior FT is a real process: tests, cases, fit. You are competing with returners. Your file needs internships somewhere.
What undergrads should not steal from MBA advice
- Pre-MBA coffee volume in July. You have years; they have weeks. Use the time; do not mimic the panic.
- “August–October is consulting recruiting.” That is MBA intern language.
- PEI stories from a 10-year career. You have campus stories. Make them deep, not fake-corporate.
- Salary dreams from MBA tables. Undergrad MBB bases in the salary guide sit well below MBA $267K–$285K totals. Compare the analyst column.
A sane year-by-year stack
Year 1: grades, one leadership thing, understand the industry.
Year 2: early program applications, a real internship, start cases lightly.
Year 3: intern recruiting as the main campaign; cases in earnest; networking emails aimed at offices you would join.
Year 4: FT only if needed; otherwise intern well and graduate.
Case competitions can be a year 2–3 resume line. They are not interviews and they do not replace the intern.

If you are a senior reading this for the first time, you are late for Discovery and maybe late for intern. You are not late for a Big 4 or boutique FT process. Change the list. Do not copy a Wharton first-year’s Gantt chart.
