A consulting internship interview is not a shortened partner final. Firms are hiring a ten-to-twelve-week employee they hope to convert. The case is real. The bar is “can we staff you in June without babysitting,” not “could you lead a diligence in year three.” If you prep only from full-time MBB blogs, you will over-rotate on PEI theater and under-rotate on being easy to staff. Full-time funnel: interview process. Converting the summer: return offer guide. Early Big 4 exposure: Deloitte Discovery — a different product.
What the intern process usually is
Same spine as full-time, compressed: resume → often an online test → one or two live rounds → offer. Many offices skip a true “final superday” for interns or fold it into a half day. MBA summer associate processes can look closer to full-time. Undergrad intern processes are often faster and more campus-driven.
You are competing with people who will also sit full-time recruiting later. The intern offer is the preferred full-time path at MBB and at many strategy firms: they would rather train you in the summer than take a cold senior. That is why the interview still includes a case. It is also why they care about coachability more than original frameworks.
Bain’s intern tracks (ACI vs MBA summer associate) and pay bands are in Bain internships. Use that for Bain-specific programs. This page is the intern interview as a format.
How the case differs from full-time
Altitude. Expect a profitability, market entry, or pricing case a first-year could touch. Partners still interview interns, but they are not always throwing private-equity expert cases. If you freeze on a basic contribution-margin tree, you fail the intern bar. If you deliver a board-ready PE memo, you did extra, not the assignment.
Guidance. Interviewer-led firms will still lead. Candidate-led firms still want you to drive. The difference is how much they rescue you. Intern interviewers rescue more. Use the help; do not wait in silence to look senior.
Math. Clean percentages, break-evens, and a recommendation with one risk. They are testing whether you can sit in a team room in week two. Calculator policy follows the invite.
Fit, not a second PEI. McKinsey may still run a PEI-style chunk. It is often shorter. They want one real story (campus leadership, internship conflict), not five dimensions. BCG and Bain intern fit is “would I put this person on a call with a client in July?” Arrogance fails faster in intern rounds than in experienced-hire rounds.
Do not recycle a 12-week full-time PEI battery if you have two weeks. One case structure, one story, and the named test are the intern package.
What “conversion intent” means in the room
Interviewers are asking a staffing question: If this person is on my team in July, do I spend the summer teaching basic Excel hygiene, or can they own a workstream? Signal the latter.
- Talk about a time you took feedback without collapsing.
- If you have a prior internship, say what you owned by week four, not that you “were exposed to consulting.”
- Ask intern-appropriate questions at the end (see questions to ask): what an intern owns by week four, how midpoint feedback works. Do not ask how many return offers they gave last year as your only question.
Dress like a full-time candidate unless told otherwise — dress code. Interns in polos at a suit final look like they misunderstood the product.
Tests and logistics
Interns get the same branded tests as full-time in many MBB processes (Solve, Casey, Sova). A fail is still a fail. Campus intern timelines often sit earlier than full-time; internships are not a winter afterthought. Track windows with the deadlines system, not a copied friend’s date.
MBA intern recruiting is its own clock: MBA timeline. Undergrad intern recruiting is junior year for the big summer, earlier for Discovery-style programs: undergrad guide.
Prep that matches the intern product
Two to six weeks of focused work beats a fake 12-week full-time plan if interviews are next month. Use the prep timeline and cut to intern scope: 8–15 live cases, daily math, one story polished.
Practice a short fit answer: why this firm, why an internship not full-time only, what you want to learn in ten weeks. “I want a return offer” is honest; say it as “I want to test the work and convert if we both like it,” not as desperation.
If you are applying to both intern and full-time (rare overlap), do not mix stories. Intern: apprenticeship. Full-time: you are ready to join the class.
After the intern offer
The interview is over. The job becomes the summer. Read return offers before you start, not in week nine. Pay context for full-time after conversion: salary guide. Bain publishes intern monthly figures in Bain internships; do not assume other firms match them.
Discovery, externships, and first-year insight weeks are not this interview. If the posting says Discovery, use that guide.
