Deloitte Discovery is an early-career pipeline internship for students who are usually still first- or second-year undergraduates. It is paid. It is competitive. It is not Deloitte’s main junior summer internship, not an MBB associate intern role, and not a guaranteed later offer. Postings differ by service line (Audit, Tax, Advisory, Consulting) and office. Read the requisition. This page is how to treat Discovery as its own product.
Junior-year case interviews: consulting internship interviews. Converting a later Deloitte summer: return offers. Those are downstream.
What Discovery is for
Deloitte uses Discovery to meet people before junior recruiting, staff a shorter or full-summer exposure period (postings commonly describe something in the seven-to-ten-week range, sometimes shorter — the posting wins), and build a bench for later internships. You are assigned toward a service line. You do real work next to staff, plus training and socials. Some classes include time associated with Deloitte University; do not assume a specific campus week unless your offer letter says so.
The career logic is: look like someone they can invite back, then recruit you into the regular intern / full-time machine. Discovery success is a stronger alumni network inside Deloitte, not a partner track.
It is open to a wide set of majors in many postings (business, accounting, econ, STEM, related). Accounting-track Discovery roles may care about CPA eligibility later. Consulting-track Discovery is still Deloitte consulting, which spans strategy-ish work and a lot of implementation — not Monitor-only, not McKinsey.
Eligibility: year, GPA preference, what to verify
Typical language in recent US postings: first-year or second-year student in a four-year undergraduate program. If you are already a junior, you are usually in the regular internship funnel, not Discovery. “Discovery Intern II” style titles sometimes include sophomores/juniors on audit paths — again, the posting’s class year and graduation year are the rule.
GPA: public write-ups and campus job blurbs often mention a ~3.0 floor with a ~3.2+ preference (some campus articles say ~3.3 preferred). That is preference language, not a law you should invent around. If your GPA is light, use low GPA evidence; do not skip a posting that says lower-GPA-plus-leadership is still considered.
Visa and work authorization vary. International students must read the posting; do not assume sponsorship.
Pay is paid and office-specific. Do not copy an MBB intern monthly figure from Bain internships onto Discovery. If you need a consulting compensation map for later full-time, use the salary guide for Big 4 bands ($80K–$115K analyst-style bases in that guide’s tables — your intern weekly rate is a different number on the offer).
How Discovery hiring differs from a case-heavy intern process
Many Discovery processes are behavioral + fit, with a lighter or optional case depending on service line. Consulting-track candidates should still be able to talk through a simple business problem, but you are not being compared to a Bain ACI case slate.
Expect: resume, maybe a video or HireVue, one or two conversations about teamwork, curiosity, and why this service line. “I want MBB and Discovery is a backup” is audible. “I want to test audit versus advisory before I lock junior year” is a Discovery-shaped answer.
Deadlines are not the MBB late-summer undergrad cluster. Early programs often sit on a winter–spring campus rhythm, sometimes rolling. Confirm on Deloitte’s careers site and your school’s posting. Use the deadlines planner; do not copy a July MBB date.
Recruiting events and Deloitte campus sessions matter more here than for a later MBB intern, because the pool is younger and name recognition is part of the funnel. Follow up like networking. A coffee chat is still the 20-minute product, not a case.
How to use Discovery if you get it
Treat it as a professional internship, not a camp. Own small work. Ask for feedback. Learn which Deloitte business you actually like. A Discovery summer in audit does not trap you forever, but it does write a story you will have to explain if you later recruit MBB (“I tested professional services early; I want strategy because…”).
A strong Discovery does not auto-convert to a junior consulting intern offer. It often helps you get considered. Reapply to the junior posting like an adult: new resume bullets from Discovery, not a claim that you already “got in.”
If you are denied Discovery, you can still recruit junior internships. It is not a lifetime MBB-style ban, but do not spam the same empty file six weeks later.
What this is not
Not McKinsey / BCG / Bain internships. Those are junior or MBA products with full case loops (internship interviews).
Not a case competition. Winning case competitions does not place you into Discovery.
Not full-time recruiting. Undergrad clocks: undergrad guide.
Apply to Discovery if you are in the named class years and want a look at Deloitte’s businesses. Apply to junior internships when that is the posting. Do not mix the packets.
