Columbia Business School sits in Manhattan. McKinsey, BCG, Bain, and most strategy boutiques are a subway ride away. That density is the recruiting product. It is also how candidates fill every evening with coffee and still under-drill.
Columbia still offers two full-time MBA starts. August-entry is the classic path with a summer internship. January-entry (J-term) is a 16-month sequence over four consecutive semesters, including summer coursework, aimed at people who do not need that internship — company-sponsored students, entrepreneurs, and industry stayers. Confirm current options and deadlines on Columbia's MBA admissions pages; the January path was active for 2027 entry as of 2026. The degree is the same. The recruiting calendar is not.

How recruiting actually feels at Columbia
It feels like the city is recruiting you whether you are ready or not. Alumni dinners, office hours, and drop-bys are logistically trivial. The hidden cost is attention. A two-year August student can treat first-year fall as internship recruiting and still have a second shot at full-time. A J-term student who wants consulting as a career change is playing a different game: there is no standard summer internship to convert, so full-time recruiting has to be the plan, and some firms' MBA internship pipelines will not map onto your calendar.
Both cohorts merge for second-year electives. Until then, do not copy a classmate's timeline without asking which term they entered.
New York office density also means you can over-network in one borough and under-prepare for interviewer-led cases. Firms assume a CBS candidate can get a coffee. They do not assume you can close a case.
August vs January: do not borrow the wrong calendar
August-entry. Protect first-year autumn for internship applications. Use the MBA consulting recruiting timeline the way a two-year US school should: pre-MBA skills, fall sprint, summer conversion, second-year full-time as backup or upgrade.
January-entry. You start in spring, take core into the summer, and skip the internship break. If you already have a consulting return offer or a sponsor, treat CBS as a skills and network overlay. If you are changing careers into consulting without an internship, talk to CMC immediately about which firms will consider you in full-time cycles, and do not assume August-entry club advice applies. Your four-week case sprint may need to sit against a full-time deadline cluster, not the internship cluster.
In-semester internships can exist for full-time students; they are not a substitute for a planned case-interview standard.
How to use the CBS consulting club without under-drilling
The club will fill your calendar if you let it. Manhattan makes "one more event" feel free.
- Set a weekly cap on coffee chats (for example, two) and a floor on live cases (for example, four). Reverse those numbers and you will be liked and unprepared.
- Use alumni for team and office specifics (which NYC group actually staffs your industry), then case the next morning.
- Mix formats: McKinsey interviewer-led versus candidate-led. NYC first rounds will not all be the same.
- J-term students should ask officers which sessions assume internship recruiting. Sit in the ones that match your gate.
When the club is full, scored cases cover the nights you spent at a West Side event that taught you nothing about exhibits.
Four weeks that respect which term you entered
Confirm live dates on the 2026 consulting deadlines page. Then pick the block that matches your start.
August-entry week 1 — Density diet. Audit last week's chats. Cut the unstructured ones. Six math-and-close drills. Write three PEI stories that are not "I go to school in New York."
August-entry week 2 — Internship-gate cases. Daily live cases, alternating format. One office visit max. Applications go out on time; new "dream firms" do not get added after you are already late.
August-entry week 3 — Subway logistics. Map interviews so you are not casing at 11 p.m. after an unnecessary downtown dinner. Sleep is a recruiting skill in this city.
August-entry week 4 — Back-to-back. Case, PEI, case. Recommendation in 20 seconds. You are simulating a Manhattan first-round day, not a library study plan.
January-entry overlay. Run the same four skills (close, format split, logistics, compression) on the calendar CMC gives you for full-time processes. Do not wait for "when the August people start." Your summer is class, not an internship sandbox. If a firm will not hire J-term career switchers without internship experience, believe the recruiter early and redirect effort.
International students should treat NYC office preference and visa timing as separate questions; confirm both with CMC.
