McKinsey salary 2026: BA $112K, Associate $192K, $267K year-1

McKinsey US pay by level: BA ~$112K base / ~$140K first-year total, Associate $192K / ~$245K–$267K year-1, EM ~$290K, AP ~$418K–$426K median, Partner $700K–$1.5M. What is public, what is not, and how to read an offer.

UpdatedReviewed by Ned

McKinsey does not publish a pay scale. The numbers below are the public 2026 US picture: campus-posted bases, H-1B-adjacent filings at peer firms, crowdsourced totals on levels.fyi, and the ranges Management Consulted and StrategyCase publish. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown. Nothing here is an offer letter.

The title of this page is the campus conversation: $112K → $192K → $267K. That is the undergrad-to-MBA-year-1 story. It is not the whole firm.

The title trap: McKinsey Associate is not BCG Associate

At McKinsey, Associate is the post-MBA / experienced generalist. At BCG, Associate is the undergrad hire and the MBA hire is Consultant. Candidates mix those titles and then wonder why one "Associate" is $112K and the other is $192K. Same English word. Different jobs.

McKinsey's ladder, in the language the firm actually uses:

Business Analyst → Associate → Engagement Manager → Associate Partner → Partner → Senior Partner.

Implementation Consultant and specialist / Expert tracks sit beside that generalist spine. They are not the same promotion clock and they are not the same pay band. Read McKinsey hierarchy before you compare yourself to a title you saw on LinkedIn.

Business Analyst: the $112K that is not take-home

US BA base sits around $112,000. First-year total is commonly cited near $140,000 once signing, relocation, and a first-year bonus are in the package (Management Consulted, StrategyCase, 2026).

What that buys:

  • Two to three years on a three-to-five person team.
  • Research, modeling, slides, a owned slice of the workstream.
  • The up-or-out clock. Historically the weakest cohort left near 20% a year. Specialist tracks have softened that, not removed it.

What it does not buy: the MBA Associate number. A BA who later returns as an Associate is not "getting a raise to $192K at the same firm in the same job." They are entering a different level after a different screen.

Hours at this level are the same 60–80 week the rest of the generalist pyramid works. The working at McKinsey page is the honest version of the lifestyle question.

Associate: $192K base, and why year-1 is $245K or $267K depending who you ask

US Associate base is $192,000 in the 2026 campus / experienced-hire conversation. That number is stable across NYC and Chicago. McKinsey does not, as a rule, pay a New York premium on this cohort the way a bank does.

Year-1 total is where sources split:

  • McKinsey hierarchy cites roughly $245,000 US total for a post-MBA Associate in 2026.
  • The 2026 salary report walks a year-1 package to $267,600 when you stack base + signing amortized into year 1 + first-year bonus + relocation the way a candidate actually receives it.

Both can be true. One is a run-rate total. The other is what hits the bank in the twelve months after you start. When you compare offers, pick one definition and stick to it. Do not put McKinsey's $267K year-1 next to BCG's run-rate and call it a $30K gap.

The job at this level is workstream ownership, client meetings, and judgment under ambiguity — not "better slides than a BA." Tenure is typically two to three years before EM or an exit.

Engagement Manager: ~$290K, and the pyramid narrows

EM is the first level where you own the engagement, not a workstream. US total is commonly cited near $290,000 in 2026, with base reported in a $200,000–$270,000 band and strong-year totals $370,000+ when bonus runs 30–40% above target (working at McKinsey, hierarchy).

Promotion difficulty steps up here. Management Consulted rates EM as a high-difficulty jump. You are now the person who decides what the BAs and Associates do on Tuesday.

Associate Partner: the sales job, ~$418K–$426K median

AP is where delivery stops being the whole scorecard and origination starts. levels.fyi's public McKinsey AP sample in 2026 sits around $273,000 base and $141,000 bonus, for a median total near $418,000–$426,000. Wider published ranges run $425,000–$600,000. Sample sizes on partnership-track roles are small. Treat the median as a center, not a promise.

Many strong EMs never clear this step. That is the filter the partner salary page exists to explain.

Partner and Senior Partner

Partners are not on a salary band. They are in a private partnership. Public estimates for US Partner total compensation run $700,000–$1.5 million. Senior Partner estimates run $1.5 million–$5 million+. Profit share, book of business, and office mix move those numbers more than any "level" table.

Fewer than 1 in 10 entering BAs reach Partner. The path is roughly 8–12 years from BA, or 6–10 from a post-MBA Associate start. Top performers occasionally do it in eight. Most people who start at McKinsey leave before that math applies to them. The partner salary guide is the long version.

How a year-1 Associate package is actually built

Use this as a worksheet, not a quote.

LineIllustrative US Associate year-1Notes
Base$192,000The number that is actually posted / widely confirmed.
Signing (amortized into year 1)$25,000–$50,000Often clawed back if you leave inside 12–24 months.
First-year bonus$20,000–$40,000Performance- and firm-year dependent.
Relocation / start extras$5,000–$15,000One-time. Do not annualize it into year 2.
Year-1 cash to you~$245,000–$267,000Depends which extras land in the first twelve months.

Compare that to the BCG MBA year-1 (~$237,500–$270,000 on a $190,000 base) and the Bain MBA year-1 (up to ~$285,000 on a $192,000 base, highest public MBB bonus ceiling). Bases are close. Bonus philosophy is not.

A Deloitte MBA offer in the same year often lands near $136,500 all-in. That is the real cross-tier gap, not McKinsey vs BCG. The salary report does the side-by-side.

What does not move, and what does

Usually fixed on a US campus offer: the BA or Associate base for your cohort. Do not walk into a McKinsey campus conversation trying to move $192,000 to $205,000 because a friend in banking got a bump. You will waste the only negotiation you have.

Sometimes movable: signing, start date, office, relocation, and — for experienced hires — level. Level is the line that changes the next five years. A $20,000 signing bonus is a rounding error next to coming in as EM instead of Associate.

Not a McKinsey conversation: "I have another MBB offer at $X, match it." They already know the other two numbers. Read consulting offer negotiation before you send that email.

Hours, tax, and the number that is not on the offer

A $267,000 year-1 in New York is not a $267,000 year-1 in Dallas after rent, and it is not a $267,000 year-1 after 70-hour weeks. McKinsey's US base is cohort-standard. Cost of living is not. The salary by city page is the geographic version of this table.

BLS's broader "management analyst" median was $99,410 as of May 2024. That is a different job. Do not use it to argue a McKinsey offer is "low." Use it to remember that the MBB number is the top of a much wider market.

International, briefly

This page is US. London MBB MBA packages commonly sit in a £90,000–£110,000 base band plus bonus and signing — not a sterling translation of $192,000. Dubai McKinsey entry has been reported near AED 276,000, with office medians higher and no personal income tax. Singapore MBB post-graduate totals are reported near SGD 197,000–277,000 (levels.fyi median ~SGD 208,000). Full city comparison: consulting salary by city. Dubai firms: consulting firms in Dubai.

How to use this if you are recruiting this year

  1. Name the level you are actually applying to. BA and Associate are different jobs.
  2. Compare year-1 cash to year-1 cash, or run-rate to run-rate. Do not mix them.
  3. Download the 2026 salary report PDF and put McKinsey next to BCG, Bain, L.E.K., Oliver Wyman, and Deloitte on the same definitions.
  4. If the offer is in hand, read offer negotiation before you reply. If the interview is still ahead, the money is downstream of PEI and the case.
