A PwC consulting invitation is not automatically a Strategy& invitation. Prep the entity on the letter, then the case style that entity actually runs.
PwC Advisory (management consulting and transformation) and PwC Strategy& (the strategy arm built from the 2014 Booz & Company acquisition) share a parent and not a funnel. StrategyCase, PrepLounge-style guides, and PwC's own US recruiting FAQ all split them. This page is the Advisory / Consulting route: online assessment, mixed case formats, and, in many finals, a written packet plus a group exercise. For the strategy-arm process, go to the Strategy& case interview guide. For pay, StrategyCase puts a Strategy& premium of 15 to 40 percent above core Advisory at every level; the PwC consulting salary tables keep the two tracks apart. CoachNed is independent and not affiliated with PwC or Strategy&.
What PwC Advisory actually runs
Start with the assessment, because it is not global. PwC's US entry-level assessment FAQ says most US entry-level candidates receive an untimed work-styles assessment (PwC suggests about 20 minutes). Results are not shared; a valid result may apply for 120 days. PwC's candidate GenAI guidance forbids GenAI in assessments and interviews unless the instructions say otherwise. UK and other international graduate routes, per MConsultingPrep and Practice Aptitude Tests, more often use timed SHL-style numerical, verbal, and inductive tests, sometimes with a situational judgement test or an Arctic Shores game. The PwC assessment test guide is the route map. Do not drill SHL if your email describes work attitudes.
| Stage | Advisory / Consulting (typical) | Strategy& (typical) | Source caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online screen | US work-styles; international SHL / games | Often none, or a lighter screen | Invitation overrides articles |
| Early interviews | Shorter, more behavioral; operational cases | Two ~45-minute slots, fit plus candidate-led strategy case in each | StrategyCase; firm recruiting pages |
| Final round | Three to five conversations; written packet and group case reported | Two to three interviews; written case in some offices; group case less central | Office variation is real |
| Case flavour | Transformation, cost, digital, operating model | Corporate strategy, deals, sometimes public sector / defence | Match the practice on the posting |
| Behavioral | PwC Professional (Trusted Leadership, Distinctive Outcomes) | PwC values plus "why Strategy&, not PwC Advisory" | Same parent, different test |
The US recruiting FAQ also notes that Audit, Tax, and DAT candidates may complete two behavioral interviews back to back, while Advisory can involve case work. If you applied to Advisory and prepared only PEI stories, you are on the wrong plan.
How Advisory cases differ from McKinsey interviewer-led and BCG candidate-led
McKinsey hands you the next exhibit. BCG expects you to drive. PwC Advisory is mixed. Some interviewers will let you open a tree and request data (BCG-like). Others will walk a structured case or a written memo (closer to an assessment-centre exercise than to a McKinsey script). Neither is a PEI. The content is the larger split. McKinsey and BCG generalist cases are usually a corporate profit, growth, or entry decision. Advisory cases more often ask how a programme gets done: shared-services design, ERP cutover economics, a cost take-out with a residual operating model, a digital roadmap with a business case. A clean "enter the market" recommendation without an implementation sequence reads unfinished.
Group work is the format McKinsey almost never uses as a primary filter. Many PwC Advisory finals and UK assessment centres put 3–6 candidates on a shared brief. Reports put discussion in a 20–45 minute band depending on whether you are in a US Super Day or a UK assessment centre; CareerTestPrep describes 30–45 minutes on a client scenario. Assessors score contribution and collaboration, not who spoke most. Strategy& first-round slots, by contrast, are usually two individual 45-minute interviews pairing fit and a candidate-led strategy case, per the Strategy& behavioral questions note. If you prep only the Strategy& shape and walk into Advisory, the group exercise is the surprise.
Worked snippet: shared-services business case (Advisory flavour)
Prompt. A multi-line insurer wants to move finance operations for four business units into a shared-services centre in 18 months. Current finance cost is $84 million. The CFO wants $18 million of annual run-rate savings and no missed close. Do you proceed?
Clarify. Savings are run-rate, not one-off. Close quality is a hard constraint. Ask whether actuarial and statutory reporting stay in the units.
Structure. (1) Baseline cost by activity (transactional vs judgment), (2) one-off implementation cost and dual-running, (3) risk to the close, (4) residual operating model. Test the activity split first, because moving judgment-heavy work destroys the savings story.
Math. If 55% of the $84 million is transactional ($46.2 million) and a centre can take 30% out of that block, savings are about $13.9 million. That misses the $18 million target. If you also move 15% of the judgment block ($5.7 million of $37.8 million) at a 20% take-out, you add $1.1 million, still short. The $18 million only appears if the centre also cuts duplicate systems ($4 million) and vendor spend ($2 million). Implementation: 18 months of dual-running at $6 million a year is $9 million cash before benefits land. Payback on $9 million against $18 million run-rate is under a year after go-live, but year-one P&L is negative.
Recommendation. Proceed only on transactional finance plus vendor and systems consolidation, targeting about $20 million run-rate with judgment work staying put until close quality is proven. Risk: a missed close in month four. Next step: time-and-activity sample in two units this month; do not sign a location lease until the transactional share is measured, not assumed.
That is an Advisory ending: a sequenced implementation, a cash timing problem, and a constraint the strategy-only answer would skip.
How to prepare this week
- Name the entity on your invitation. If it says Strategy&, leave this page.
- Match assessment prep to the route: work-styles consistency for US; timed data interpretation for SHL markets. See the assessment guide.
- Run one operational case on CoachNed and force an implementation sequence in the close.
- If a group or written exercise is named, rehearse a shared recommendation and a 3–5 slide packet, not another oral profitability case.
Do not quote one PwC number in fit. Levels.fyi reports a $195K median across PwC management-consultant roles and a $239K median for Strategy&. Advisory associate total cash is commonly cited in a $93K–$132K band; Strategy& associate $115K–$161K, per StrategyCase and the salary page. Confirm the written offer.

Frequently asked questions
Is Strategy& the same interview as PwC Advisory?
No. Different funnel, case flavour, and often a different assessment.
Does PwC use interviewer-led McKinsey cases?
Not as a house style. Advisory is mixed; Strategy& is typically candidate-led.
Will I have a group case?
Common in Advisory finals and assessment centres; less central at Strategy&. Confirm the invite. CoachNed is independent practice, not affiliated with PwC or Strategy&. Cases on CoachNed are AI-simulated. Formats vary by country and service line.
