How recruiting actually feels at HEC Paris
It feels like two cities. Campus life is a bubble. Recruiting is in Paris. Students who try to "drop by" the 8th arrondissement between classes discover the commute is the day. Students who never leave Jouy-en-Josas discover that coffee chats do not come to the forest.
Language is a staffing fact. Some Paris rounds will run in English; some will test French. London processes will not care that you can discuss HEC in French. Pick the office, then pick the language, then practice in that language under fatigue.
The MBA is not the same population as the Grande École. Firms know both. Do not spend the interview explaining the French education system. Spend it closing a case. Grande École alumni networks can help you get a coffee; they will not sit the case for you. MBA classmates who are newer to France may over-network in English and under-prepare for a French-language Paris round. Split the difference: use the network, practice the room.

How to use the HEC consulting club without under-drilling
- Schedule campus mocks on non-Paris days. Schedule coffees on Paris days. Do not mix them into a mush that does neither well.
- Mix McKinsey interviewer-led and candidate-led.
- Practice PEI that is not a tour of European stamps in a passport.
- If the club is bilingual, say which language you need this week.

Four weeks built around Paris trip days
Place this immediately before your first burst. HEC MBA timing is not a US two-year autumn by default — confirm with careers — but the logic is: campus volume, city conversion, commute discipline, compression. Week 1 — Campus volume. No Paris trip required. Daily cases. Three PEI stories. Write an office/language thesis. Math drills in the interview language. If you cannot close in French and you need French, this is the leak, not "more English frameworks."
Week 2 — First Paris batch. One day in the city, capped coffees, case the night before on campus. Applications started. Do not add Lyon "while we are at it." The RER is a scarce resource; spend it on two conversations with a staffing thesis, not a tour.
Week 3 — Format split and French/English honesty. Interviewer-led and candidate-led. If French is required and weak, this week is language plus cases, not extra frameworks. If French is not required, stop using it as a delay.
