How recruiting actually feels at IMD
It feels adult and exposed. Classmates often have more years of work than a typical two-year MBA. That helps PEI if you have real conflict. It hurts if you talk like a director for six minutes and never get to a case number. Interviewers will not waive math because you ran a P&L.
Lausanne is not Zurich, Geneva, or London. Office access is a trip. Swiss and broader European staffing are plausible; confirm language and work permits. A tiny class means you cannot be "one of 80 people casing." You are one of a handful. Reputation inside the class matters. Use that as discipline.
There is no summer internship in the US two-year sense as the main clock. Full-time recruiting is the clock. If you planned to learn cases in month four, you planned to miss the process. IMD's workload is the other clock: leadership modules and a small-group culture will fill evenings. Protect case hours the way you would protect a board meeting. Seniority is not a substitute for a timed exhibit.
French or German can matter for some Swiss and neighbouring offices; English will matter for others. Ask the firm. Do not assume Lausanne English is the interview.
How to use IMD's tiny ecosystem without under-drilling
There may not be a huge consulting club. The class is the club.
- Pair with the person who will be hardest on you, not the person you travel with.
- Write leaks down. In a small group, verbal feedback gets social. Paper does not.
- Use faculty and career staff for targeting (Switzerland versus other European offices), then case.
- Mix McKinsey interviewer-led and candidate-led from week one.
When you cannot find a partner without recycling the same two people, scored cases prevent incestuous grading.
Four weeks of a one-year, experienced-hire clock
Start this before arrival if you can; otherwise it is weeks 1–4 of the program, not a later elective season. Use the 2026 deadlines page immediately. The MBA consulting recruiting timeline is a two-year US document — compress it.
Week 1 — Experienced PEI, beginner case honesty. Four stories with a personal decision (not "my function decided"). Daily math until you are faster than your seniority implies. One full case. If the case is weak, do not hide behind your CV. In a tiny class, bluffing is public.
Week 2 — Format and geography. Interviewer-led and candidate-led. Write a one-page office thesis (Zurich, Geneva, a non-Swiss city). Confirm permit questions with careers. If Switzerland is not realistic for your passport, name the backup city this week, not in offer season.
Week 3 — Travel batch. One trip window to a target city. Case the night before. Cap coffees. In a tiny class, over-networking is obvious and not impressive.
Week 4 — Visible compression. Back-to-backs. You will be tired from the IMD workload. That is the point. Use CoachNed on the night you would rather skip because "everyone knows I can do this."
